Satellite vs. Space Data Center is often asked question. Let simplified it
Table of Contents
What Is a Satellite?
A satellite is a spacecraft placed in orbit, either in low Earth orbit or geostationary orbit, primarily to transmit or relay signals. This is used for various purposes.
- Communication for public or military purposes
- Weather pattern identification provides more accurate data than ground radar
- Earth observation – from desert to dense forest area
- Scientific data collection- This can be done for various purposes, from mining to industrial
Note that most of the satellites are launched to perform a specific task. The space data center collects data and processes it, but satellites can’t. In fact, they have limited computing power.
Satellite Examples: International Space Station, Starlink Satellite, Communication Satellites, Weather Satellites, etc.
What Is a Space Data Center?
A space data center is nothing but a copy of terrestial data center which need technological advancement for launching and a special type of hardware to survive in space. Unlike satellites, these data center are designed specifically to store, process, and manage large volumes of data. The concept is emerging after the AI boom in the market.
These will open the door to many private companies that are experts in launching satellites. Normal satellites don’t need any hard disk to store the data and don’t have the capacity to process it.
The following are key characteristics of a space data center which is missing in normal satellites.
- High computing density — likewise in data center, these space data center have large racks of servers but don’t require water as coolant, as the temperature of space is very low.
- Large data storage capacity – Large data centres are designed to store large-scale data, not just they hold, but also process it. The processed data will be sent back to Earth. This will reduce the data latency and give faster results than the data stored in the territorial data center.
- Powered by solar energy – Normal satellites didn’t need large power to run, but space data centres need that. On teritorial data center these power comes from various sources, but space has abundant solar energy and no day/night inefficiency at certain altitudes. This will make them more attractive.
Satellites vs. Space Data Center Comparison
| Satellite | Space Data Center |
| Transmit data | Compute data |
| Not store Data | Store Data |
| Small Scale Solar Panel | large Scale Solar Panel |
| Old design | compact design |
| No computing chip required | Computing chip required |
| Establised technology | Emerging Technology |
| Relay GPS Signal | Process AI in Orbit |
Why Satellite vs. Space Data Center Matter?
The confusion arises because both are rotating around the Earth, and while launching, they have no difference. But if you weigh them, especially in the case of a space data center, these will be less than satellites. The weight of communication satellites is sometimes beyond 4000 kg.
The emerging case for space data centers includes that satellites didn’t have as follows.
- Avoiding ground energy costs — similar to satellites, they have foldable solar panels, but when we build a data center on the ground, they require lots of space. Also, this energy comes from renewable or non-renewable sources too. On orbit, the space data center generates energy from solar panels, and it didn’t have affect weither its days or night at some altitudes.
- Processing Data– Satellites did not even store a large amount of data, but space data center not only store it but also process it.
- Send Back Process data – All types of data are first stored on a hard disk, then, after processing, they will be sent back. This will reduce latency while transferring data to the ground station.
- Geopolitical Neutrality – On Earth, there are legal jurisdictions of a particular country, but in orbit, no such legal rule applies. The only thing they need is a space data center must be placed in the right position.
- Heat Dissipation – Due to high rank server rank they generate lots of heat, but in spac,e low temperature works as a blessing. This will dissipate heat without water.
Who Is Building Space Data Centres?
US companies like Google, Axiom Space, Starcloud, Cowboys Space, etc., are leading in space data centres. These company either runs on high networks indiviusal, venture capital funds, or they are backed by big tech companies.
This company invest billion of dollars in this new technology. The Chinese government also backed this concept, and recently, Orbital Chenguang, China’s space data center, got $8.4 billion in funding. Google works on project sunchacher, and now they are in talks with SpaceX to launch these data center in space. In addition to India’s indigenous Sarvam AI partnership with Pixxel to launch, compute and process the data in space.
NVIDIA funds most of the company’s AI Chip demand as they have the best in this business. The European Space Agency also shows interest in this concept. Earlier, these companies find hard to fund, but after the AI boom, most of the companies got Unicorn status in less than 3-4 years.
Conculsion
Satellites and Space data center are orbiting in space, but completely in terms of use case. Space data center is an updated version of the territorial data center with storage of data, computation and processing of data and sending back to Earth. The satellites are just giving information based on their use case, like weather, military, mapping of terrain, etc.
