How Cowboy Space raises $275 Million Round Change Business?
Back in time, when the company’s purpose was to collect solar energy from space and send it back to earth via already proven technology. After this, the funding company says that they change there objective from collecting solar energy in space to having a megawatt space data center.
Cowboy Space has designed the rocket’s upper stage, unlike a traditional rocket that delivers a separate payload to space. The upper stage of the rocket stays with the satellite to form a complete data center. The weight of this data center will be similar to that of a communication satellite. Once in orbit, the upper stage will operate as a 1 megawatt data center.
Cowboy Space Corporation Details
Way back in 2024, when the company was founded with the name Aetherflux and raised 10 million dollars with Bhatt’s own cash to have a solar energy collector. Later, they changed it to Cowboy Space Corporation Limited. The team comprises veterans from SpaceX, NASA, and NVIDIA. They started with 10 employees in March 2024, and later they joined the Commercial Spaceflight Federation in October 2024. In the same month, they purchased the Satellite bus from Apex.
In 2025, the Department of Defense (now Department of War) Operational Energy Capability Improvement Fund approves the Cowboy space solar program for proof-of-concept development. This is their first-of-its-kind experiment where they teamed up with DOW, boosted there invester confidence.
Aetherflux intends to launch its initial satellite by the end of 2026 to demonstrate space-to-Earth solar power beaming.
The major problem with these types of Aerospace and AI companies is getting funding, as they are highly capital-intensive industries. For that t, they need a constant pipeline or series of funding. In earlier times, unding took mass surcitn,y but now everyone wants to join it at rthe ight valuation.
In this funding round E, Energy Ventures, Construct Capital, and IVP take part b, but most of the funding is given by Index Ventures.
Cowboy’s Space Partnership with NVIDIA
Since starting of this company, hey are well focused on rocket launch with folded solar panels. The hardware part o, other than this technology, will take time to build. So to compute, they will collaborate with NVIDIA. They will gave there NVIDIA Space-1 Vera Rubin Modules. These modules are tested in place for their harsh environment capacity. The rocket with the module will be placed in low Earth orbit will aallow or real-time AI inference and data processing.
Cowboy’s Space Corporation is committed to building an AI computing data center constellation called “Galactic Brain”. This will be announced when they tie up with NVIDIA, and they pivot to AI Space data centers powered by space-based solar energy.
Cowboys Space Corporation Future Plan
Cowboy Space data center plans to bring the first orbital compute node to commercial operation by Q1 2027. Most of the observers said that it is difficult to achieve on time, and if they can achieve it on time, then they consider a further funding round at a good valuation.
In 2027, they send a cluster of satellites demonstrating high-speed laser communications for data transmission between orbital assets and ground stations. One of the major advantages of US companies is that they have given access to lots of ground stations to recieved there data.
Cowboy’s approach is a throwback to Explorer 1, the first US satellite, which was built as the final stage of a rocket, but the problem is that it was tested at a very low level. Most curious is that they have set a timeline for Q1 2027, which appears sooner.
The NVIDIA Space-1 Vera Rubin GPU delivers up to 25 times the AI compute of an H100, designed for Cowboy’s orbital data centers. China and the US are rivals to get these H100 chips. If Cowboy’s space is able to achieve it, then it would be a game-changer for space data centers. It combines two Rubin GPUs with a single Vera CPU, and uses cosmic ray bit-flips — where radiation in space causes computing errors.
Bhatt said the first rocket would launch no earlier than the end of 2028. In the same year, they purpose-built a rocket with a 1 MW data center integrated into the upper stage. Unlike the company, Cowboy Space Orbital Data Center has a 20-25 tonne payload, and it has 800 NVIDIA GPUs.
The company believed that this is slightly more powerful than SpaceX Falcon 9, and they will use a booster that is designed to be reusable eventually.
Conculsion
Cowboy Space raises $275M for a space data center at a valuation of $2 Billion, which makes them a unicorn in just less than 3 years of launch. This company, instead of separating the upper stage booster of the rocket they will attach it with satelite. The goal is to achieve a one-gigawatt data center in space, and this can be achieved by partnering with a company like NVIDIA, which will provide the computing chip for the data center. This funding is mainly led by Index Ventures.
