Starcloud: Space Data Center Pionner

Starcloud space data center tech company started in early 2024 with an idea to have large-scale AI computing in space. Earlier, when the company was founded it name was Lumen Orbit, and later rebranded with the new name Starcloud.

Starcloud Company Founder Details

In 2024, three co-founders named Philip Johnston, Ezra Feilden and Adi Oltean came together to bring a science fiction idea into reality. They started with a small team, and after getting a partnership with Y Combinator and NVIDIA, they grew to 12 employees.

The details of Starcloud Cofounder are as follows.

Adi Oltean( Co-founder and Chief Engineer of Starcloud)

He is leading Starcloud software parts, where he has more than 20 years of experience in the big tech company Microsoft. He was a principal software engineer whose job was to build large GPU clusters.

Later, he joined SpaceX and was responsible for tracking beams.

Education: Degree in Computer Science(University of Bucharest)

Philip Johnston (Co-Founder and CEO)

This is his second startup, as he previously founded an e-commerce brand aggregator. During Harvard, he gained experience in national security. His previous startup also rose $50M with a small number of employees. His interest gained in the space sector while he worked as an associate at McKinsey for national space agencies.

Education:

1. MPA in National Security & Technology (Harvard Kennedy School)

2. MBA (Wharton)

3. MA in Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics (Columbia University)

4. CFA charterholder

Ezra Felien (Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Starcloud)

Among the three co-founders, he is the most experienced in terms of space technology. He worked at Airbus Defence and Oxford Space Systems, where he contributed to the mission to the NASA Lunar Pathfinder.

To power the space data center, we required large amounts of power from solar panels. These plates can be size more than kilometre and placing them in space is a very complex process. This is an area where his experience comes in picture. He specialises in deploying large solar arrays.

Education

PhD in Materials Engineering (Imperial College of London)

Starcloud(Earlier Luman Orbit) is one of the largest seed fund raisers due to the massive demand for AI Data center in the world. The investor goes for intense bidding to increase their equity.

The first seed funding of Starcloud started in December, where the company pitch there idea. Initially, public perception was not very high, but later, more than 200 venture capital participants participated, rising $11M at a $40M Valuation.

In February 2025, Starclaud Space Data center raised another company funding of $10M from existing investors and some new investor making total value to $21M.

Multiple big companies invest in Starcloud, including the CIA’s venture arm (In-Q-Tel), NVIDIA’s Inception Program, and 468 Capital, among others.

Starcloud-1: Effective Solution for the Territorial Data Center

Former Lumen 1 has given hope to the Data Center company that can now build to store their company data in space without any problem.

The details of this space mission are as follows.

1. Starcloud 1 Lunch Date – November 2, 2025

2. Launch company Spacecraft – SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket

3. Starcloud 1 Power Source – Large solar plates provide a constant power supply

4. Starcloud 1 Cooling – As the space temperature is already very low, this provides automatic cooling. The water-based cooling system doesn’t required, so it saves lots of water.

5. Starcloud 1 altitude- It was placed into low orbit with an altitude of up to 325 km, and its lifespan is 11 months. After completing this project, it will burn up.

6. Starcloud1 Size – It has a mass of 60kg (Almost equal to a small refrigerator)

7. Starcloud 1 Purpose – It is only for the demonstration of Space Data Center technology. The latter operational data center will be available in late 2027.

Starcloud Future Plan

The company has a plan to have a 5GW data center with power coming from a foldable solar panel up to 4*4 KM.

Starclaud Space data Center box will have the ability to sustain low temperatures in space, and it is powered by a solar panel. The hardware doesn’t need a cooling system, and it can communicate with the space station on the ground.

The most complex of these boxes is whether we will be able to have power, cooling and continuity or not. The second one is whether we can sustain the chip price or not. But after the NVIDIA partnership, the total expenditure became much less. The price of chips is more than the satellite cost.

The company has an ambition of 5 GW of solar power stations by 2030 and 10 GW by 2032. This will be worth $13 billion of energy as of today’s calculation.

As the Starcloud Space Data Center is orbiting in the lower Earth area, the data transfer could be very costly. So the company will process this data itself in space, and then these process data will be sent to the earth station. This will reduce data latency and reduce the response time.

CEO Philip Johnston predicted that in 10 years, all the territorial data centers will be replaced by space data centers.

Starcloud 1 will demonstrate that a powerful NVIDIA H100 GPU will be deployed in space with proper function. This AI is 100 times more powerful than any existing system in orbit.

While launching this satellite, the environmental cost will be higher, although the company pushed the idea that carbon dioxide will be 10 times less after that.

As a vacuum of deep space works as an infinite heat sink, the need for an evaporation tower will be eliminated.

Application of Starcloud Space Data Center

In addition to the orbital data center, this system will process data related to national disasters, such as wildfire detection and distress signal response. The data will be processed in space itself, as the latency will be less.

The Image that captures in space uses light wavelengths beyond human range. The synthetic aperture image will build a high-resolution image. This image data will be collected by the satellite and sent back to the ground. This process takes time and a large amount of money; hence, the Starcloud space data center will save both.

Starcloud 2 – How it transforms the space data center concept

Starcloud 2 will process the data terabytes in space itself. Today, the data will be processed in the ground station, and it has several problems. According to most of the print media, the data storage will be subject to US laws. With a rise in demand for SSDs due to the AI boom, the price of space data center looks lucrative as it offers cost-cutting in the long term.

The outer space radiation will be a major headache as the lifespan of the space data center is still questionable.

Conclusion-

Starcloud 1 or Starcloud 2 is not just a scientific experiment, as it turns into reality where a low-cost data center will take the lead company into a high profit margin in future. As Starcloud offer low running energy cost, low requirement of water, no power backup supply, etc. The only things that add cost are radiation shielding hardware for the space data center.
